In addition, every quarter we recognize our DAISY Award recipients with a ceremony honoring their skillful and compassionate care.
The DAISY Award was started in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family who wished to acknowledge the heartfelt care his nurses provided. The DAISY Award has grown from one hospital to now over 3,000 hospitals nationwide. Patients, families, or peers may nominate nurses who display skillful and compassionate care. Here at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, we recognize our DAISY nominees and crown an awardee every quarter with a ceremony and a breakfast of cinnamon rolls.
Message from our Chief Nursing Officer, Jineal Shinn, MSN, RN
What an honor and privilege it is to serve as a nursing leader here at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. I am dedicated to the nursing profession and hope to provide daily inspiration to make a difference in the lives of the people I have the privilege of serving alongside.
My goal is to bring innovation to the clinical setting for improved outcomes and to foster a collaborative work environment so that our nurses can heal the mind, body and spirit of those we touch through their contribution in compassionate, patient-centered and high quality care in the exemplary practice of nursing.
I’m excited to witness the growth of our Nurse Residency program as we prepare and equip our nurses to not only transform care at the bedside, but to continue to provide excellence in professional nursing care practices in the transformation of health care overall as inter-professional healthcare partners.

Nursing Education
Nursing students train in multiple nursing units throughout the hospital while working alongside a preceptor who teaches fundamental pediatric or neonatal nursing.
Tuition Reimbursement
As a part of #teamMHSflorida, we offer tuition reimbursement to help nurses continue their educational journey and grow within the profession.
Specialty Certification
Many of our nurses, clinicians, and leaders hold certifications in their areas of specialty and teach review courses to those interested in pursuing specialty certification. We participate in the no-pass-no-pay program with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, where nurses only pay for the exam upon successfully passing the exam.
Clinical Ladder
Clinical Nurses are provided with the opportunity for professional development and monetary incentive for going above and beyond in their practice through our Clinical Ladder. Throughout the year, numerous opportunities are available for nurses to accumulate points in a variety of categories that foster nursing professionalism and promotion to a higher level which include: professionalism, clinical skills, education, experience, certification, special projects, and councils.
Electronic Learning Management System
We offer computer-based training course free of charge via Aspire, our learning management system. Nurses can search, register, and complete courses needed for their role and license. Credit hours are tracked, sent to CE Broker, and certificates are available for print if needed.
Live Classes
We host many live classes including Nursing Grand Rounds, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Nurses also have access to free classes and educational events throughout our entire healthcare system.
