Overview: Serves as the legal counsel to the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, a healthcare system established by the Florida Legislature. The District conducts its operations as Memorial Healthcare System (MHS). Acts as chief legal officer for MHS; provides advice to the Board, the President/CEO, senior management and others on legal, regulatory, enterprise risk and a variety of other matters. Collaborates on and oversees strategic business and legal initiatives, transactions and operations.

Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience; Florida does not impose a state income tax.

Fifteen (15) years of experience in healthcare law

Participates in the development of the organization’s strategic vision, business and legal initiatives, transactions and operations
Provides advice to the Board of Commissioners, the President/CEO, Senior management and others regarding general legal, business, regulatory, risk, privacy and other matters
Provides advice regarding governance, including matters uniquely applicable to public entities, to the Board of Commissioners and President/CEO
Oversees a system-wide clinical risk program in compliance with state regulations
Oversees and strategically directs malpractice claims management and in-house pre-suit process
Oversees management of outside counsel, litigation and settlements
Develops, implements, and oversees a system-wide enterprise risk management function
Oversees a system-wide insurance program to mitigate financial risk to the District
Oversees a robust privacy program that complies with all state and federal regulations in collaboration with the Chief Information Security Officer* Note: the District reserves the right to separate this function to a separate Chief Privacy Officer
Serves as a negotiator for major District transactions, as requested by the President/CEO
Negotiates, and oversees compliance with significant corrective action plans entered into with other governmental entities
Oversees records retention and records management
Provides advice regarding and oversees management of public records requests
In collaboration with the Chief Compliance Officer, protects the District by providing education and advice regarding regulatory matters
Oversees and manages the Legal Department in order to provide in-house legal expertise in an efficient and effective way in support the mission and vision of the District
Oversees a system-wide contract review and management system to protect the District and support its business needs
Qualifications & Skills
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
Strong academic credentials, excellent research and writing skills
Detail-oriented, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong work ethic and the highest level of integrity and business ethics
Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action quickly
Membership in the Florida Bar. The Florida Bar’s in-house counsel exception will NOT apply

Geographically, this position will be located in Broward County, FL, which is one of the three counties in South Florida that make up the Miami metropolitan area.
