Medical/Surgical/Telemetry

Overall Description:

Med/Surg/Tele is a great specialty for new nurse graduates to begin their careers in nursing.  It makes up the foundation of nursing practice and provides opportunities to better understand and collaborate with multiple disciplines and other nursing units.  They’re responsible for taking care of patients with acute medical, neurological and cardiac issues, as well as those requiring surgical intervention.  Many nurses who work in this practice area also excel at coordinating care for multiple patients at a time, while keeping the entire healthcare team working towards the same goals. They have high-level critical thinking skills and a wide range of clinical knowledge which set the stage towards their professional growth and development.

As an added incentive, new nurse graduates hired into this practice area would be eligible to apply for the RN Fellowship Program after completing the one-year Residency Program.

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

Overall Description:

Acute inpatient rehabilitation is an area that specializes in assisting patients to return to normal function at home as a result of traumatic injuries, stroke and other physiological disorders.  Comprehensive services are provided to support patients with physical conditions resulting from illness, injury or chronic disabilities that may affect the functionality of the brain, spinal cord, limbs, muscles and nerves. They also support our patients’ caregivers, because we know a loved one’s health can impact the whole family.  Rehabilitation nursing can be very rewarding and provides benefits that go far beyond a paycheck.

As an added incentive, new nurse graduates hired into this practice area would be eligible to apply for the RN Fellowship Program after completing the one-year Residency Program.

Behavioral Health

Overall Description:

Behavioral Health provides a full range of services as a baker act receiving facility. The department consists of an adult emergency room, a child / adolescent emergency room, inpatient thought disorder unit, inpatient mood disorder unit, inpatient co-occurring unit, and an inpatient child / adolescent unit. The team works collaboratively to build team members skills related to psychiatric care across the life span including intervention and prevention for adults and children, psychiatric emergency assessment, and inpatient care.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • 7 patients to 1 nurse
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • 12-14 Weeks

Oncology Services

Overall Description:

Oncology nursing provides services that generate, implement, and educate patients and healthcare professionals on the science of cancer therapies, particularly as medical, radiation, cellular, and surgical options evolve to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer as well as hematological conditions requiring acute nursing care.  Nurses who work in oncology must be very detail-oriented because medication administration can be very complex.  Oncology nursing is a great career for nurses who enjoy ongoing relationships with patients and their families.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • 4-5 patients to 1 nurse
    • 3-4 patients to 1 nurse if post-op or on chemotherapy
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • 18-22 Weeks

Critical / Intermediate Care Services

Overall Description:

Intermediate Care (IMCU) is an area situated between the Intensive Care Unit and the general nursing units. This area provides a higher level care without being in the ICU. A variety of diagnosis and care can be delivered in this environment with highly trained nurses. The patient population on those units require attention and care from a highly skilled nurse to deliver quality care and provide better outcomes. These units are very important to the hospital structure to meet the needs of the population.

Critical Care (i.e. ICU, PICU, & CVICU) is a service provided to patients with severe medical illnesses and life-threatening injuries. A variety of treatments are offered from monitoring, medicated drips, life sustaining procedures and high-tech equipment. These patients need highly trained healthcare providers who can critically think and deliver the best of care in a timely manner. It’s a fast-paced environment that requires thorough assessment skills and immediate action when changes in patient status occur.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • Intermediate Care:  3-4 patients to 1 nurse
    • Critical Care:  2-3 patients to 1 nurse.   
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • Intermediate Care:  20-24 weeks
    • Critical Care:  24-28 weeks
  • This practice area is currently accepting new nurse graduates at;
    • Memorial Regional Hospital (Adult IMCU Only)
      • Adult ICUs are not accepting new nurse graduates in this Cohort.
    • Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (Pediatric ICU Only)

Emergency Services

Overall Description:

Emergency nursing is a specialty focusing on the care of patients who require prompt medical attention to avoid long-term disability or death. In addition to addressing “true emergencies,” they increasingly care for people who are unwilling or unable to get primary medical care elsewhere and come to emergency departments for help.  ED nurses treat everyone from newborns to the elderly, with every conceivable illness, injury or condition.  The variety means that emergency nurses need to have top-notch critical thinking and prioritization skills as well as be highly proficient in any number of areas.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • 4-5 patients to 1 nurse
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • 22-26 weeks

    • Memorial Regional – SOUTH

Neonatal Services

Overall Description:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) dedicates itself to providing an environment where clinical expertise coexists with the belief that the strength of the healing process lies within the family unit.  It is the philosophy of the NICU to maintain a safe environment, where health care professionals and families work together to provide the highest quality of care to our patients.  They provide Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care services and fully equipped to care for the tiniest and most critically ill babies, offering the greatest range of neonatal services and support.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • 2-3 patients to 1 nurse
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • 16-20 weeks
  • This practice area is currently accepting new nurse graduates at;
    • Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (Neonatal ICU)
    • Memorial Hospital Miramar (Neonatal ICU)
      • Newborn Nursery is not available for this cohort.

Procedural Areas

Overall Description:

The Joe DiMaggio Pediatric Cardiac Procedural Suites is a full-service care department and embodies the Mission, Philosophy and Core Values of the organization. The unit is located on the sixth floor of the children’s hospital and consists of 4 state-of-the-art invasive procedure rooms, a 5-bed area where patients are cared for pre and post procedure. Patients enter the unit from inpatient status, outpatient status, admission from emergency department, or are transferred in from other institutions.  After the recovery phase, most of our outpatients are discharged home. Inpatients are transported to an appropriate inpatient /telemetry/Intermediate care unit, or intensive care unit as directed by the physician based on their acuity. The nursing team in this area will need to be able to care for the patients throughout all the procedural phases of care. The procedure area is open Monday through Friday and emergency patient care situations are treated 24-7.  All team members must be available to respond to afterhours emergencies as our required response time is to be less than 30 minutes.  Duties and responsibilities include but limited to intake of patient information for admission, assist intra-procedure by monitoring and circulating the case as well as being able to assist the physician at the sterile field in a scrub nurse role. All team members are to clean room and equipment and ensure procedure room is ready for next case/emergency that may arise.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • 1 Patient per case.  Number of cases vary based on procedure schedule.
    • All team members who are on-call must be available to respond to afterhours emergencies as our required response time is to be less than 30 minutes.
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • 24-28 weeks
  • This practice area is currently accepting new nurse graduates at;
    • Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (Pediatrics ONLY)

Surgical Services

Overall Description:

Surgical nurses care for patients before, during and after surgery. Some nurses will prepare the patient for surgery, others serve during the actual procedure and additional nurses work in the recovery area. Surgical nurses are part of a well-orchestrated team that also includes staff doctors, anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists, surgeons, surgery techs and maybe even residents or medical students.  Everyone has a job, and everything has a place. That makes surgical nursing a great fit for nurses who love order and organization.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • OR:  1 Patient per case.  Number of cases vary based on procedure schedule.
    • PACU:  2 patients to 1 nurse
    • All team members who are on-call must be available to respond to afterhours emergencies as our required response time is to be less than 30 minutes. 
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • OR:  26-30 weeks
    • PACU:  24-28 weeks
  • This practice area is currently accepting new nurse graduates at;
    • Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (Pediatric OR)
    • Memorial Hospital – WEST (PACU Only)

Overall Description:

The Family Birthplace provides care to women from labor and delivery to mother/baby. These services accommodates the medical needs of all women and provide expert care to treat your body’s gynecologic needs. Our facility is recognized for high acute care, specialized in high risk deliveries to other complicated illnesses or diseases. We are a patient-family centered care and provide care from a highly skilled, knowledgeable group of healthcare providers to meet your needs at any stage of your life.

  • Average Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • Labor & Delivery:  3 patients to 1 nurse.  1-1 if high risk
    • Mother/Baby:  3-4 couplets (Mom & Baby) to 1 nurse
  • Average Time on Orientation: 
    • Labor & Delivery:  24-28 weeks
    • Mother/Baby:  14-18 weeks
  • This practice area is currently accepting new nurse graduates at;
    • Memorial Regional Hospital (Labor/Delivery & Mother/Baby)
    • Memorial Hospital – WEST (Mother/Baby Only)
